My wife, Celeste and I just returned from a quick weekend trip to New York City and, of course a visit to Broadway. It was a very fun trip.
Celeste has always been a big fan of Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife, The Morning Show) and I have always enjoyed the talent of Peter Gallagher (American Beauty, Sex, Lies and Videotape, Grace and Frankie). With this in mind, we decided to see “Left on Tenth”, a brand new romantic comedy written by Delia Ephron. It is based on her recent memoir called Left on Tenth : A Second Chance at Life.
Miss Ephron is best known for co-writing the big hit movie “You’ve Got Mail” with her late sister Nora Ephron. The sisters often wrote together. They also wrote “Michael“ and Hanging Up” as well, and were co-authors of a popular play called Love, Loss, and What I Wore.
And “Left on Tenth” is no ordinary romantic comedy. It is a heartwarming story about a surprising reunion (later in life), between Delia Ephron and Peter Rutter, both widowed, who reconnect many years after knowing each other much earlier in their lives. Simply put, they show us what it means to take a second chance in both life and love.
And just like that, their love is in full bloom until Delia is diagnosed with a serious illness, a similar one that led to her sister Nora’s death several years before. And in the middle of all the tumult in fighting for her survival, Peter shows Delia exactly what it takes to fight back.
This play takes you on one heckuva ride. But “Left on Tenth” could very well become the winner of the 2025 Best Play Tony Award. It all depends of course. I sure hope it does win the award.
